ASTM F88: Standard Test Method for Seal Strength of Flexible Barrier Materials

Introduction

ASTM F88 is a widely recognized standard that evaluates the seal strength of flexible barrier materials, such as those

used in medical, food, and consumer product packaging. This test ensures packaging integrity by measuring the force

required to separate sealed layers, helping manufacturers maintain quality and safety.

Scope and Application

ASTM F88 applies to flexible films, laminates, or foil seals. It is critical for industries requiring sterile or airtight

packaging, including:

Medical devices (e.g., pouches for sterile instruments)

Food packaging (e.g., snack bags, pouches)

Pharmaceuticals (e.g., blister packs)

Test Procedure

Sample Preparation: Cut sealed strips of standardized width (typically 1 inch or 25.4 mm).

Testing Setup: Use a tensile tester to peel the seal at a controlled angle (90° or 180°) and speed (typically 10–12 in/min).

Measurement: Record the peak force (in N/15mm or lb/in) required to separate the seal.

Key Factors Affecting Results

Seal parameters (temperature, pressure, dwell time during sealing)

Material properties (film thickness, coating, elasticity)

Test conditions (peel angle, speed)

Conclusion

ASTM F88 provides a reliable method to assess seal strength, aiding in the development of robust packaging solutions.

By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can enhance product safety and performance.
